Shady Cove man killed after car hits utility pole

A Shady Cove man died early Tuesday morning in a single-vehicle crash near the intersection of Highway 62 and Butte Falls Highway that disrupted phone service in the area.

James Willard Hager, 73, Shady Cove, died when his car crossed two lanes of Highway 62 and hit a utility pole, said Andrea Carlson, a spokeswoman for the Jackson County Sheriff's Department.

The accident disrupted telephone service, including 9-1-1 service, and high-speed Internet connections in an area serving 500 to 600 customers of provider Century Link. A representative said that equipment destroyed in the wreck would have to be rebuilt before service could be restored.

Spokesman Tony Timmons said late Tuesday the company could not estimate when that will happen, noting that parts will need to be brought from other locations to repair the destroyed equipment.

The area affected includes Butte Falls Highway from Highway 62 to Crowfoot Road, Highway 62 from Mountain View Drive to North Hammel Road and Highway 234 from Highway 62 to Dodge Bridge.

Carlson said the crash occurred just after 1 a.m. An investigation into the cause of the wreck is continuing, but she said ice on the road may have played a role.

Butte Falls-area residents without phone service can get law enforcement help at a command center set up at Reese Creek Christian Center at 900 Butte Falls Highway, the sheriff's office said.
