Reward offered for information on tool thefts

Pacific Power and Crime Stoppers of Southern Oregon are offering a combined $3,500 in reward money for information leading to the arrest of suspects who stole construction tools at job sites in Prospect. The Jackson County Sheriff's Department is investigating the series of thefts that occurred on Mill Creek Drive and Red Blanket Road sometime between April 25 and May 4.

Pacific Power crews are working on projects in the area and several of their toolboxes were broken into, officials said.

Weekly Bros. Inc., the contracting company doing the work, is missing several toolboxes, two circular saws, a Skillsaw, a 5,500-watt generator and an electric pump.

Pacific Power lost 50 feet of stainless-steel cable, two winches and other tools.

The total cost of the missing items is approximately $10,000, officials said.

There are now two rewards being offered for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for these crimes. Pacific Power is offering a $2,500 reward, and Crime Stoppers of Southern Oregon is offering an additional $1,000.

The suspects could be looking to sell the equipment for a profit. The steel cable is not worth much on the black market, but the tools are valuable, Jackson County sheriff's spokeswoman Andrea Carlson said.

"This is a significant amount of equipment and tools," she said. "This creates problems for the work crews and contractors. They will have to get replacement items."

The Jackson County Sheriff's Department is asking anyone with any information to call the tip line at 541-774-8333 or Crime Stoppers of Southern Oregon at 1-800-850-0580. Callers can remain anonymous.
