Police look for assault suspect

Police are seeking the public's help finding a man who tried to rape a woman outside her apartment complex on Poplar Drive in Medford early Wednesday.

The 28-year-old woman told police she was attacked by a mask-wearing man with a knife just after 2 a.m. as she took her dog outside the complex in the 1400 block of Poplar Drive.

The woman fought the man off, but not before suffering minor injuries.

"He really blindsided her," Medford police Lt. Tim Doney said.

He ran west toward the rear of the state Driver and Motor Vehicle Services office near Biddle Road and Progress Drive, police said.

The suspect is described as standing 6 feet tall and weighing 220 to 230 pounds. He wore a black ski mask with holes cut in it for his eyes and mouth.

He was also wearing a dark short-sleeved T-shirt and dark-colored pants. The victim told investigators he smelled strongly of cigarettes.

"We'd like to remind people who leave their houses late at night to keep to well-lighted areas and if possible to not go out alone," Doney added.

Anyone with information is asked to call Medford police at 774-2250.
