Police ID victim in Wednesday crash

Police identified the man who died Wednesday in a head-on collision at Fern Valley Road in Phoenix as Stephen Paul Green, 48, of Medford.

The driver of the other vehicle, James Roland Tormey Jr., 73, of Medford, remained in critical condition Thursday at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

Tormey was headed west on Fern Valley Road in a gray 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee at about 3:40 p.m. Wednesday when he left his lane for unknown reasons and crashed nearly head-on into a red 1990 Jeep Cherokee driven by Green near the intersection of Luman Road.

"Fern Valley when you're going toward I-5 from Phoenix shifts to the right, but Tormey's vehicle was all the way over in the other lane," said Phoenix police Sgt. Jeff Price.

Green was declared dead at the scene. Tormey was rushed to the hospital by ambulance.

The Phoenix exits from Interstate 5 and Fern Valley at Bolz Road were closed until about 6:50 p.m. Wednesday.

Phoenix police assisted by the Medford Police Department, Jackson County Sheriff's Department and Oregon State Police continue to investigate the accident.

Green was born in Alturas, Calif., and moved to Medford in 1998, his parents, Don and Pauline Green, of Medford, said.

Before having a hip replacement in late December, he worked as an electrician.

"An awful lot of people thought the world of him," Don Green said. "If you needed anything, he was there to help. He had a ton of friends."

He also had a brother, Jim Green, and a niece, Lacey, of Loomis, Calif.; a sister, Darla Schulte, and nephew, Gavin, of San Diego, Calif.; and other family members.

One of his hobbies was restoring old cars with his father.

"We spent lots of midnight hours on them," Don Green said.

He was never married and had no children.

"He was 'Uncle Bear' to all the kids he knew because he always wanted to give them bear hugs," said his mother, Pauline Green. "He didn't have kids of his own, so he liked everybody else's.

"I can't say anything else; it just hurts too much."
