Police capture suspect in G.P. bank robbery

GRANTS PASS — A Grants Pass-area transient was arrested Friday in connection with Thursday's robbery of an Umpqua Bank branch on Williams Highway, police said.

Officers were able to track down David Allen Whiting, 43, in Merlin less than 24 hours after he allegedly robbed the Grants Pass bank, Grants Pass Department of Public Safety officials said in a news release.

Police said a man entered the bank just after 3 p.m. Thursday and demanded money from a teller. The suspect did not display a weapon and was last seen fleeing on foot from the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash, police said.

A search of the area surrounding the 1600 block of Williams Highway failed to turn up a suspect.

Whiting was located Friday afternoon on Peach Street in Merlin. He was arrested and charged with second-degree robbery, possession of methamphetamine and a parole violation.

Anyone with further information about this incident is asked to contact the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety at 474-6370.
