One Happy Camp fire crew drowning victim identified

HAPPY CAMP, Calif. — Authorities have identified one man who drowned Monday evening in the Klamath River while rescue teams continue the search for a second man.

George Barbis, 35, of Okanogan, Wash., died while swimming in the river. He was an employee of the food service providing meals to fire crews battling fires in the Happy Camp area, officials said.

A second man, who also worked for the company, was swept away by the water. The search for him will continue today.

The two men were swimming with a third man in the river near Clear Creek when the two victims were swept away by the current, according to the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Department.

The third man then telephoned police at 2:44 p.m. to report the incident, deputies said. Two Happy Camp residents used their boats the search the river while deputies walked the banks, deputies said.
