NMHS fire quelled

A wooden shed at North Medford High School, used to house foam athletic pads and other equipment, caught fire sending columns of black smoke billowing over the school's athletic field Sunday evening.

Medford residents scrambled to call 9-1-1 and report the fire, which started at 6:51 p.m., Battalion Chief Ken Goodson of the Medford Fire Department said.

"People were definitely calling us," said Goodson. "It did make a lot of black smoke."

Four engine crews responded and quelled the flames within about 10 minutes of the initial call, he said.

"They put it out in short order," said Goodson. "The primary thing that was burning was the foam pads. They are highly flammable."

Juveniles were sighted in the area near the wooden shed which houses the athletic equipment for the school's pole-vaulting team, said Goodson. The cause of the fire continues to be investigated, he said.
