Murphy man faces murder, arson charges

A Murphy man is accused of murdering someone, then setting fire to a fifth-wheel trailer where the body was found.

Troy Miles Dawson, 24, was lodged at the Josephine County Jail Saturday on charges of murder and first-degree arson in connection to a Friday afternoon trailer fire in a rural area east of Murphy.

The victim's identification was being withheld late Saturday pending next-of-kin notification and medical examiner confirmation, according to an Oregon State Police release.

The fire, first reported at 3:15 p.m. Friday in the 1500 block of Board Shanty Creek Road, fully engulfed a fifth-wheel RV trailer, according to Rural Metro Fire of Josephine County reports. Josephine County sheriff's deputies and Oregon State Police were dispatched to the scene after fire crews found unspecified indicators of suspicious activity. The investigation locked down a Rural Metro station on Williams Highway late Friday, according to the release.

The trailer fire spread to grass, reaching roughly a tenth of an acre, but the fire had nearly burned itself out when crews arrived and did not pose a threat to nearby homes. Crews found a body at the scene, Rural Metro Fire said, but it did not specify where.

The incident triggered a manhunt for Dawson, whom police initially described as a person of interest, Friday evening before OSP found him late Saturday morning walking in the area of Red Spur and Summit Loop, northeast of Murphy. He was arrested at 11:18 a.m., according to Josephine County jail records.

How the victim died has not been released, but during the manhunt OSP warned that Dawson was possibly armed with a firearm. Dawson has no prior criminal history in Oregon, Circuit Court records show.
