Medford men who slipped down embankment recovering at home

Two Medford men are recovering from injuries after falling 35 feet off an embankment late Friday night near Gold Beach.

Steven Stotler, 35, and Jake Skeeter, 36, were riding all-terrain vehicles with two other Medford men in a remote area four miles from the closest road when they stopped around midnight and began walking in the dark. Stotler stepped off an embankment and simply "disappeared," according to Lt. John Ward of Curry County Sheriff's Department. Skeeter then walked to the edge and also fell.

Nick Musser, 35, called for help. Musser and the fourth man were able to get Stotler back up the bank, but Skeeter had fallen on some rocks and couldn't move. Curry County Search and Rescue, the sheriff's department and other agencies responded. A rope team used a six-seat ATV Ranger to get to the area and used a backboard to stabilize Skeeter and transport him out.

Skeeter was then transported by Cal-Ore Life Flight to Curry General Hospital about 3 a.m. Both Skeeter and Stotler were treated at the hospital.

According to Musser, both Skeeter and Stotler are recovering from their injuries at home. The four Medford men had been staying in a cabin in the woods when they decided to take the late-night ATV ride, Ward said.
