Ashland High School and Lincoln School were temporarily put on lockdown around 10:30 a.m. Thursday after a high school student who is known to often wear tactical gear to class was reported as a man with a holstered handgun on campus.
Ashland Police Chief Tighe O'Meara said police responded to campus within 2 minutes after receiving the call at 10:29 a.m. and found the student on campus with no firearm. He said the student often goes to class wearing tactical gear. The lockdown were lifted within 15 minutes of resolving the issue.
"It was resolved quickly," O'Meara said. "(The student) wasn't aggressive at all. In fact, he wears this on a regular basis."
The report came from a non-employee of the school who mistook the student as "a man dressed in tactical gear and armed with a holstered handgun," O'Meara said.
The student will likely not face criminal charges, but he might face administrative sanction, which is decided by the school, O'Meara added.
Lincoln School on Beach Street was closed by Ashland School District in 2005, but a portion of the facility houses the Children’s World Montessori preschool and kindergarten.
