Grants Pass youngster dies after hit by car

GRANTS PASS — A 9-year-old Grants Pass boy died after being hit by a car Monday evening.

The crash in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 1600 block of Kellenbeck Avenue, Grants Pass, was reported about 6:30 p.m. Monday, police said.

Dakota Robert Davis, 9, who lived at the complex, rode his bike out from behind a parked car into the path of a vehicle driven by another apartment complex resident, Amy Marie Alger, 37, Grants Pass police Sgt. Rob Gunderson said.

Police reports said other residents comforted the boy as he drifted in and out of consciousness until crews from American Medical Response and the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety arrived.

Paramedics rushed him to Three Rivers Community Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery for massive internal injuries to his abdomen, police said. Mercy Flights then flew Dakota to Doernbecher Children's Hospital in Portland, arriving about midnight. He was declared dead at 12:41 a.m. Tuesday, police reported.

Gunderson said an investigation into the crash is ongoing, and a police report will be forwarded to the Josephine County District Attorney's office. He said the preliminary indication is that the crash was an accident that won't result in charges.

Gunderson reminded parents to make sure kids wear a helmet and know the rules of biking safely.
