Fire chars 19 acres as plume rises high

Fire crews responded to a grass fire near the 4200 block of Pioneer Road on Saturday.

The blaze, reported at 2:19 p.m., produced a dramatic tower of smoke over Phoenix that was visible throughout the valley. It grew to 19 acres before fire crews had it under control within a couple of hours. Firefighters from Jackson County Fire District No. 5, Oregon Department of Forestry, Phoenix Fire Department, Medford Fire Department and Jacksonville Fire Department responded.

Though several houses were threatened and a couple evacuated, no structures were damaged, said Larry Decker, captain at Fire District #5. The cause remained under investigation Saturday evening.
