Eagle Point man jailed for multiple charges

Medford police arrested a man Friday whose attempted robbery July 9 of a Purple Parrot store was scuttled by a customer whom he chased downtown, shooting at him with a handgun.

Brandon Lee Gillespie, 21, of Eagle Point, was charged with first-degree robberty, two counts of attempted murder, two counts of first-degree attempted assault, three counts of first-degree kidnapping, seven counts of unlawful use of a weapon and felony possession of a weapon. He was lodged in the Jackson County Jail, where he remained late Friday in lieu of about $6 million bail.

Wearing a colorful beach towel around his waist like a sarong, Gillespie allegedly entered the lottery and deli outlet at 828 S. Central Ave. late July 9 with a TEC-9 assault pistol and ordered a clerk and a customer to comply with his demands when another patron entered.

The would-be robber commanded the customer to come inside, but the man saw the large gun, turned and ran.

The suspect pursued him south on Central Avenue and fired a volley of shots from the pistol. The customer escaped, and the suspect fled west across Riverside Avenue, firing more shots.

Surveillance videos and other evidence helped Medford police nab Gillespie, who was out on parole.
