Driver still in critical condition

A 22-year-old woman who suffered head injuries after her car hit a utility pole on Blackwell Road near Kirtland Road Saturday night remains in critical condition, officials said.

Rebecca L. Morse, 22, of Medford, was trapped unconscious for 13 minutes inside her Oldsmobile Alero before crews from Jackson County Fire District No. 3 freed her.

She was driving north in the 7000 block of Blackwell Road when the car spun out on a curve, rolled and hit a power pole, caving the door in about 18 inches, firefighters said. No one else was in the car and no other cars were involved.

An ambulance rushed Morse to Providence Medford Medical Center, with serious injuries that the Jackson County Sheriff's Department described as serious and potentially life-threatening. She remained in critical condition Monday evening, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Sheriff's Deputy David Bartlett said the woman was cited on a charge of driving under the influence after preliminary tests showed she had a blood alcohol content of .15, almost twice the legal limit of .08.
