Deputies talk suicidal man into surrendering

Authorities blocked Merry Lane in White City for an hour and a half Thursday night before negotiators persuaded a suicidal man to surrender.

According to Jackson County Undersheriff Rod Countryman, the Sheriff's Department received a call at about 10:30 p.m. from family members indicating that a 22-year-old man was despondent over the recent death of a relative and was threatening to shoot himself. He had already fired several shots from one of his two firearms.

Two sheriff's negotiators and a 15-member SWAT team surrounded the home in the 2300 block of Merry Lane and blocked off the street.

Negotiators spoke to the man using a portable sound system and eventually convinced him to surrender.

He was taken to Rogue Valley Medical Center's psychiatric ward for evaluation, where he was treated and released.
