Central Point resident killed in truck crash

A 59-year-old Central Point man died Wednesday in a single-vehicle crash on Highway 238 near Murphy, Oregon State Police said in a news release.

Harold Ross was a passenger inside a 2007 Ford F-550 utility truck that swerved off the highway and struck a power pole at around 6 a.m.

When OSP troopers arrived at the scene, driver Craig Campbell, 35, and rear passenger Kory W. Woolsey, 46, both of Grants Pass, had exited the wrecked truck, which was registered to Rick Robertson Logging, of Grants Pass.

Ross, however, was trapped inside and soon died at the scene, OSP said.

Campbell told troopers he swerved to miss a deer that jumped into the road. This caused him to loose control of the truck and crash near where Highway 238 intersects with New Hope Road.

None of the men were reportedly using safety restraints, but the vehicle's front airbags deployed, OSP said.

Traffic was blocked in one lane for more than an hour.
