Cave Junction crash victims identified

A Talent woman who had taken her grandson and his friend to the coast was killed in a head-on collision on Highway 199 at Eight Dollar Mountain Road in Cave Junction Sunday evening. The driver of the other car also died, but the two boys are recovering.

Carolyn Calkins, 61, of Talent, was driving a 2005 Kia Amanti north when a southbound Mitsubishi 3000 coupe driven by Azlan Breeze, 24, of Cave Junction, crossed the center line for an unknown reason and the two cars collided. Both Calkins and Breeze were pronounced dead at the scene.

Calkins' grandson, Tracy Jackson, 13, of Medford, was initially listed as seriously injured, but was released from Three Rivers Community Hospital Monday, hospital officials said. Gerardo Rodriguez, 12, of Medford, was listed in good condition Monday morning, but hospital reports indicated he was in serious condition Monday night.

A family friend, Dulce Fleming, said he had been released and was recovering at home.

She said the two boys were friends at Lone Pine Elementary and were looking forward to attending Hedrick Middle School.

The accident, which happened shortly before 7 p.m. Sunday, closed Highway 199 in both directions for about four hours. Oregon State Police troopers from the Grants Pass and Central Point offices are continuing the investigation.
