A suicidal man armed with multiple guns outside a rural Eagle Point home held a standoff with police that lasted into the evening Tuesday.
A SWAT team responded to a residence in the 1500 block of Worthington Road after a woman called 911 at about 4:15 p.m. to report a suicidal man, according to Sgt. Julie Denney with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.
“The man pointed a gun at her and threatened her,” Denney said. “She was able to leave the residence quickly and call 911.”
Near the closed intersection of Brophy and Worthington roads, Denney described at least one handgun and a rifle involved in the standoff. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office closed Worthington at Brophy Road and asked people to stay clear of the area.
The man reportedly fired shots from the home in the presence of sheriff’s deputies in two separate incidents over the course of the more than four-hour standoff, but as of 8:45 p.m., no injuries had been reported, according to Denney.
“We’ve been negotiating with the suspect and attempting to get him out of the home unharmed,” Denney said Tuesday evening. “We’re doing everything we can to have everything come to a peaceful resolution.”
The man’s name or his relationship to the woman has not yet been released. Neighbors in the rural area have been notified “so they can stay safe,” Denney said.
As the standoff neared its fifth hour, the SWAT team was still surrounding the residence while they attempted to negotiate with the man.
Medical staff with the Sheriff’s Office and Mercy Flights were staged at the scene, and a crisis response expert from Jackson County Mental Health had been called, Denney said.
