Brawl results in stabbing

A 31-year-old man was in fair condition Sunday at Rogue Valley Medical Center recovering from stab wounds received during a late-night brawl Saturday in the 2200 block of Crater Lake Avenue.

"Three individuals, (including the 31-year-old man) had been drinking at a bar in that area, and there was a disturbance between the three individuals and two juveniles," said Medford police Sgt. Curtis Whipple. "One of the juveniles went and got help. When he came back is when the altercation and stabbing occurred" at about midnight Saturday.

Whipple said detectives were investigating the stabbing until 7 a.m. Sunday. They'll continue the investigation today , he said.

It's unclear what the motive for the assault was, but it could have been self-defense, Whipple said.

Witnesses told police that the suspects in the fight fled the scene before police officers arrived. Police used a dog to search for the suspects and were led to a nearby apartment complex, where they found a suspect and several witnesses.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Medford police Detective Bill Ford, or the on-duty watch commander, at 774-2200.
