Bookkeeper allegedly stole $31,760

A bookkeeper for Howiee's on Front is accused of stealing $31,760 in cash from an ATM at the Medford pub.

Cassandra Marie Savage, 28, of the 700 block of Beekman Avenue in Medford, has been charged with aggravated first-degree theft. She entered a not-guilty plea Tuesday in Jackson County Circuit Court and has a pre-trial conference hearing scheduled for Dec. 26, according to court records.

In May, Medford police began investigating a possible employee theft that appeared to have been ongoing since the beginning of the year, according to a probable cause affidavit.

An investigator allegedly discovered Savage was taking cash from an ATM machine, removing close-out receipts and forging internal documents, the affidavit said.

The investigator obtained a subpoena for Savage's banking information and allegedly found multiple deposits for the same amount of money stolen at the bar, the affidavit said.

After multiple interviews with subjects, the investigator was allegedly able to eliminate all suspects except for Savage, the affidavit said.

On Aug. 23, the investigator contacted her at her home, the affidavit said.

"Savage admitted to taking the ATM cash and stated she had a substance abuse, gambling and spending problem," the affidavit alleged. "She told me the main motivation for her stealing the money was to support her cocaine and alcohol addiction abuse and her gambling problem. She admitted she started stealing the ATM cash in December of 2016."
