Bank heist is 'a caper,' police say

A Chase bank branch burglarized over the weekend remained closed Tuesday while investigators gathered and evaluated clues.

A sign in the bank window at 81 E. Stewart Ave. and information provided by police offered no details on when the branch would reopen. Bank officials couldn't be reached Tuesday.

On Monday morning, bank employees found someone had entered the bank between closing time at 1 p.m. Saturday and about 8:30 a.m. Monday, when workers arrived to open the bank. The burglar or burglars had entered the bank's vault and taken things, although investigators declined to disclose what was missing.

Police said bank officials would contact any customers who might be affected by the loss. While the bank is closed, customers have been directed to a branch just across the street, inside Fred Meyer, 1301 Center Drive.

The investigation, which involves Medford police, the FBI and forensic technicians from The Oregon State Police Crime Lab, is ongoing. No other details have been released about the crime, which officials called "quite a caper," and "the stuff movies are made of."
