Authorities seek information on theft of trailer

WHITE CITY — Investigators from the Jackson County Sheriff's Department hope for tips that will help them learn who swiped a dump trailer stored in White City last week.

A 6-by-10-foot, 2006 Bravo dump trailer belonging to Vitus Construction Inc. of Gold Hill was taken from a storage yard at 1388 Antelope Road in White City. The theft was discovered Wednesday and likely happened overnight on Nov. 11 or 12, the Sheriff's Department reported Tuesday.

The trailer, valued at $5,500, is black and has 4-foot-high sides.

An investigation showed that someone came onto the property during the night, cut a section of the chain-link fence surrounding the locked-up property and rolled it back. The thieves then pulled the trailer through the fence onto the adjacent First Student bus lot and hauled it away.

"It had wheels, so it was probably hooked up to a truck or something with a hitch," said sheriff's spokeswoman Andrea Carlson.

Diesel fuel also was stolen from the bus lot that night, investigators said, though that is not believed to have been part of the trailer theft, police said.

"It's its own separate case," Carlson said.

Vitus Construction owner Corey Vitus said it's not the first time company property has been stolen.

"We have thefts on occasion on our projects," he said, adding he thinks most of the incidents were drug-related. "(Thieves) have stolen a whole truck before."

The Sheriff's Department is asking anyone with information about the theft to call the department's tip line at 541-774-8333 or Crime Stoppers of Southern Oregon at 1-800-850-0580. Callers can remain anonymous. Crime Stoppers will pay up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest.
