Ashland pedestrian remains critical

An Ashland man remained in critical condition Thursday at the Oregon Health & Science University in Portland after he was struck by a vehicle on Wednesday evening near Jackson Road on the northern edge of Ashland.

According to Jackson County Fire District No. 5, the first responders to the accident, 47-year-old Joseph Hamilton was wearing dark clothing when he attempted to cross Highway 99 on foot and was struck by a Toyota pickup driven by Ashland resident Vincent Muolo, 56.

Hamilton, who has no known address, suffered major injuries to the head and arm, Oregon State Police reported. He was rushed to Rogue Valley Medical Center, then transferred to OHSU. He endured a lengthy surgery Thursday, OSP said.

OSP officials said Muolo most likely will not face charges in the accident.
