13-year-old shot in foot accidental, official says

PHOENIX — A Phoenix teenager was shot in the foot in what police there are calling a "prank gone wrong."

The 13-year-old was standing outside his home on Oak Street along with several others when a shot was fired that struck him in the foot, Phoenix police Chief Derek Bowker said.

"At this point, it looks to be accidental," Bowker said. "It could be a prank gone wrong."

Bowker said the suspect fled in a vehicle after the shooting. Phoenix officers and Jackson County sheriff's deputies still were searching for the shooter after 11 p.m.

Bowker declined to identify the suspect until further investigation into the incident.

The chief did say the alleged shooter knew the victim.

"We believe (the suspect) was just playing games and made a poor decision," Bowker said.

Bowker said the shooter was standing 10 to 15 feet from the teen when he fired the shot.

"He knew he hit him because (the victim) was screaming in pain after he was hit," Bowker said. "(The suspect) then left at a high rate of speed. He knew something bad had happened."

The victim was transported to the hospital for treatment, Bowker said.
