Students of the month

The Kiwanis have recognized North Medford High School students Krystal Toderick and Cesar Ramirez as May 2008 Students of the Month.

Cesar Ramirez, son of Ignacio and Ernestina Ramirez, is a senior at North. He has been involved in many activities at North, including the Latin Traditions Club and Amnesty International, and has volunteered his time as a Spanish tutor and as a role model for others at Wilson Elementary School through the Buddy Program. An avid basketball player, he was a varsity letter-winner on this year's North High team that placed fifth in the Class 6A state tournament. He accurately describes himself as "a pioneer for his culture," as he is not only the first Hispanic to play on the North High varsity basketball team but the first to receive the team's "Most Valuable Player" award as well. He says that he feels blessed "with a great family and for the education I have received as a child and now as an adult." After graduation, Cesar plans to attend Southern Oregon University and study political science.

Krystal Toderick, daughter of Irene Chavez and Joe Toderick, has a cumulative grade-point average of 3.64, earned while taking a variety of honors and advanced placement classes at North Medford. A three-year varsity letter winner in soccer, she served as co-captain of the team this year and received "All-Conference Honorable Mention" recognition for her performance on the field. She was chosen by the North High faculty to serve on the school's Link Crew and has also been active in the Buddy Program and the Sparrow Club. She has put her passion for soccer to excellent use through her volunteer efforts with the community's TOP Soccer program. She plans to attend Willamette University in the fall, where she will begin a program in pre-medicine, leading to a career somewhere in the medical field.
