Student of the month

The Kiwanis Club of Ashland has recognized Kai Dowding as its October 2010 Student of the Month. Kai is the daughter of Krista Verton and Kent Dowding. Each month during the school year, a senior student from Ashland High School is honored. Each Student of the Month receives an award certificate and a $100 savings bond. In May, two winners will be further honored with a $1,000 college scholarship.

Academically, Dowding is maintaining a 4.0 cumulative grade-point average. She has taken five advanced-placement classes, including English composition, government, literature, environmental science and calculus. She has received honors for geometry, advanced algebra 2, and pre-calculus. She is a National Honor Society award winner, a member of the Math Honor Society, and was student of the year in global studies and Spanish 2.

She is a member of the AHS Key Club, the Knitwits (a knitting group), and the Interact Service Club. She also is active in other service-oriented activities, including Relay for Life, a Fresh Start Counselor for incoming freshmen, and she was an Ashland Runway contestant.

Dowding loves music and has won awards for principal French horn and principal clarinet in the youth symphony of Southern Oregon. She also was selected to the Oregon All-State Honor Band, and she was an Oregon Ambassador of Music honoree. She has been on the AHS pep band for four years, the AHS symphonic band for four years, the AHS pit orchestra, and the youth symphony of Southern Oregon. She attended the Western International Band Clinic, has been the band co-librarian, and she is the keyboardist for the rock band "Turpentine."

She is thinking of taking a year off before college and considering a year of community service in South America to work on various volunteer projects.
