Scholarship award

North Medford High School student Dakota Garza, who has beat the odds by succeeding in school despite daunting obstacles, has received a “Beat the Odds” scholarship for $10,000 over the next four years to attend college.
Stand for Children Leadership Center's “Beat the Odds” Scholarship Awards Program is designed to highlight the potential of Oregon's young people as well as the challenges which prevent too many of them from succeeding.
The “Beat the Odds” scholarship program aims to raise awareness about the importance of improving the odds for Oregon's children. Because the scholarships are underwritten by patrons, money raised through the scholarship awards breakfast will support Stand's work to improve Oregon schools.
The awards breakfast was held Nov. 17, 2010, at the Oregon Zoo in Portland. More than 350 business and civic leaders attended the fourth annual Beat the Odds luncheon.
The highlight of the program was a video presentation on each of the three scholarship winners. Each awardee was present with their families and friends to accept the awards.
