The Butler Bandshell at Lithia Park in Ashland provides a picturesque locale for an evening of music, both from the Ashland City Band, and a series of events featuring local singers and songwriters.

Monkeys & Penguins & Tubas, Oh My!

The valley's three largest cities are offering up a long list of free movies and music this summer, encouraging families to bring lawn chairs, coolers and kids to enjoy the family-friendly atmosphere.

Movies are rated G, PG and PG-13 kick off at dusk. The free cinema experiences take place under the stars and, perhaps the nicest part during warm summer months, in cooler evening temperatures.

In order to enjoy deal family time, moviegoers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets, coolers and dinner. For those who don't bring dinner, vendors sometimes offer hot dogs, drinks and snacks.

The city of Medford will offer movies in its Bear Creek Park amphitheater, off Highland. Central Point will project movies onto it's Pfaff Park band shell, and Ashland, new this year, will host "Movies on the Range" at the city's Oak Knoll Golf Course twice each month.

The same three cities will offer a series of free concerts this summer. Concerts range from rock and blues to jazz and big-band style tunes.

Medford Parks and Recreation's "Movies in the Park," sponsored by U.S. Cellular, will run June 23-Aug. 18. For two hours prior to each movie event, U.S. Cellular will provide free bottled water and snacks. On Mayor's Weekend, June 23, Mayor Gary Wheeler will read Curious George stories before the movie.
