Kiwanis Club 'Postcard Buddy Day'

The Kiwanis Club of Ashland held "Postcard Buddy Day" on Jan. 15. Every school year each Kiwanis member is assigned a sixth-grade student at Ashland Middle School and asked to send a postcard to their school buddy once a month throughout the school year. They are especially encouraged to send postcards while they are traveling so the students can see pictures from around the United States and the world. Don Paul, a long-time member of the Kiwanis Club or Ashland, organizes this activity each year and works with Bonnie McCracken, the sixth-grade teacher.

Prior to the get-together, McCracken asks the students to research some of the places shown in the postcards. Several of the students then give a short presentation about the places they have researched.

In January, the Kiwanis members visit the classroom to meet their postcard buddies. Following a pizza lunch, the members introduce themselves and then talk with their buddy about current or past employment, recent travels, their hobbies and interests,

During February, the Kiwanis Club of Ashland and several members of the Ashland High School Key Club distributed bouquets and Valentine's Day cards to the residents of the Linda Vista Care Center. The cards were individually made by Ashland High School Key Club members. Long-time Kiwanis member Sandy Kuykendall arranges four activities with the residents of Linda Vista each year. The four events include Christmas, Thanksgiving, Mother's Day and Valentine's Day. She was joined during this event by Kiwanians Sylvia Sullivan, Berniece Monning, Don Paul, Russ Chadick and four members of the Key Club.
