Grace Christian student wins regional spelling bee

On March 9, Dara Worthington, daughter of Kelly Worthington and an eighth-grader at Grace Christian School, took first place at the Northwest Regional Spelling Bee, which covers Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana. On May 8, she will compete against 50 other students in 10 regions across the United States at the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

The Association of Christian Schools International Spelling Bee consists of up to 100 schools per district that compete within their grade. The top two spellers of each grade level go to district, which took place on Feb. 5 at Grace Christian School in Medford. Dara took first place in the eighth-grade level and fourth place in the spell-off between fifth- to eighth-graders. She then advanced to the regional on March 9 and took first place after 34 rounds and the last two spellers had 17 rounds between them.
