Awards and Honors

Ashland High School student Paris Connor has been awarded the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange scholarship for the 2011-2012 academic year and will join a group for 50 American high school students sponsored by ASSE International Student Exchange Program who will live with a host family and attend high school in Germany for one academic year.

As a Congress-Bundestag scholarship recipient, she will experience German life firsthand. She will live with a host family while becoming a member of her German host community, attending school, participating in community life and learning about another country and culture, about the world and its diversity and about herself.


The National Society of High School Scholars has announced that Oregon Connections Academy student, Taylor Ambrosio Wood of Ashland, has been selected for membership. The society recognizes top scholars and invites only those students who have achieved superior academic excellence.

Wood will be attending the Boston Conservatory in the fall.


Nicholas Morales of Medford is one of seven Oregon 4-H members that have been selected to join a delegation of 30 youth and five adult chaperones that will travel to Mongolia this summer though a leadership program developed by the University of Wyoming. The group will leave June 16 and return July 15. They will participate in community service projects in and around the capital city of Ulaanbaatar and attend the Mongolian festival of Naadam.


Three local girls were state finalists in the National American Miss Oregon Pageant, held May 29 and 30 in Portland.

Emily Cushman, 16, daughter of Tina M. Grant, has been chosen as a state finalist in the 16-18 age group.

Emily has been active in her church's youth group and working as a nursery attendant. She enjoys singing, reading books, dancing, making and spending time with friends, spending time with her nephews and most of all, writing books

Whitney Guevarra, 15, daughter of Barbara Watson, has been chosen as a state finalist in the 13-15 age group.

Whitney's activities include basketball, spending time with friends and family and reading. She enjoys road trips, shopping and spending time with her little sister.

Felicia Rose Barringer, 11, daughter of Jim and Virginia Barringer, has been chosen as a state finalist in the 10-12 age group.

Felicia's activities include karate, orchestra, volleyball, dog sitting and writing books. She hopes to be published by the time she graduates from high school. She also enjoys swimming, reading, drawing, playing games with family and friends, listening to techno music, movies and traveling and seeing new places.


Students of the Fusion Force Dance Team of Medford won seven division first place trophies, two third place trophies and one "High Score Beginning Group" for their tap number "Goody Two-Shoes" during the 33rd annual, I Love Dance Competition held April 16 and17 in Sacramento, Calif.

The team consists of the following dancers: Dusty Mallette, Samantha Gioia, Celine Seus, Thomas Awbrey, Nathan Awbrey, Emily Awbrey, Felicity Sayler, Madeline Chun, Hallie Shean, Shelby Boyersmith, Gabriella Wisnovsky, Grace Johnson, Megan Dobson, Christina Owen, Audrey Yechout, Audrey Mills, Rylee Boyersmith, Macy Bettis, Katie Erno, Josue Garcia, Abby Bohn and Abby Kirkpatrick.

The dancers, ages 6-13, study at Fusion Dance Academy under the direction of Kimberly Awbrey, Karen Glos and Lia Kirkpatrick.


Oregon and Jackson County Family and Community Education (FCE) members sponsor an essay and artwork contest for fourth-grade student every year. The theme for 2010-2011 was "Caring," and students were asked to write an essay and draw a picture involving the theme.

The winners for the 2010-2011 contest in Jackson County are from Grace Christian School. They are:

First place: Tess Homeier.

Second place: Landon Moir.

Third place: Lauryn Squyres.

Tess Homeier also won first place at the state level and her essay and artwork was entered into the national contest.
