Awards and Honors

North Medford High School Kiwanis Students of the month for April 2010 are Christian Vandagrift and Matt Bagley.

Christian Vandagrift is the son of Angelique and Gabriel Delles and Jim Vandagrift and a senior at NMHS, where he maintains a grade-point average of 3.989. His academic achievements include many AP courses, honors classes and Spanish 5.

His extracurricular activities include Oregon Skills USA, dancing (tango), self-education (he taught himself enough German to move into German 2 without taking the class).

His awards and accomplishments include second and third places for computer programming with Oregon Skills USA.

He would like to attend Harvard, MIT, or Cal Tech and become a novelist.

Matt Bagley is the son of Ralph and Pamela Bagley and a senior at North Medford High School, where he maintains a 3.198 GPA.

His academic achievements include many AP courses and earning a 45 on the AP U.S. history exam.

His extracurricular activities include the Mayor's Youth Advisory Commission, Web design, wind and jazz ensemble. His awards and accomplishments include praise for originality on his senior paper, and he was commended by the mayor for work on the Mayor's Youth Advisory Commission.

His post-graduation plans include majoring in hardware and software engineering. He hopes to some day work for Photon or Quantum computer research.


The Kiwanis Club of Ashland has recognized Jack Dempsey, son of Christina Berg and Jackson Dempsey, as its April 2010 Student of the Month.

Dempsey was on the team that competed in the Academic Challenge last year, and won. He is again on the team and in the finals this year. He is taking AP classes, received honors in the Math Honor Society, is a member of the National Honor Society, and was a participant on the Brain Bowl team. Also, he is the Science Bowl coach at the Ashland Middle School and has been a Fresh Start Counselor. He maintains a grade-point average of 4.0.

He has volunteered at the Ashland Community Hospital.

He will decide whether to attend Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, or Columbia University in New York. He plans to pursue a degree program in chemical engineering.

A senior student from the Ashland High School is honored each month during the school year. The Student of the Month receives an award certificate and a $50 savings bond. During the month of May 2010, two of the nine monthly winners for the current school year will be further honored with the "Tommy Laird Kiwanis Scholarship," a $1,000 college scholarship.


The Crater Lake chapter of the Daughters of American Revolution announced that its candidate for outstanding American history teacher award won the Oregon State competition.

Lesley Klecan Of St. Mary's School received both the chapter and state certificates plus a pin at the June luncheon and awards ceremony.

The chapter Regent, Carolyn Monaco, placed third in the nation for the American Heritage competition. Her fiber arts, cross stitch entry titled, "Patriots on Parade," featured her seven grandchildren and pets parading for July Fourth.

Certificates were awarded from NSDAR to the chapter for increasing in membership, news articles in the national publications and award to the chapter registrar.
