Signa and Jacob (Jay) Fischer celebrated their 60th anniversary with a family dinner on Sept. 11, 2014, at Rosario's in Medford.
Lt. Jacob Fischer of Staten Island, NY, and Signa Hannaford of Medford met in Phoenix, Ariz., when Signa's parents were stationed at Goodyear Naval Air Station, and Jacob was stationed at Williams Air Force Base. Jay was in Air Force pilot training and Signa was attending Arizona State University previous to their marriage in Phoenix on Sept. 11, 1954. They were stationed in many places following their marriage, including Waco, Texas; Valdosta, Ga.; and Falmouth, Mass.; during which time their sons, Jay and Steven, and daughter Sharon were born. In 1961, they received orders for Japan and spent four interesting years there, during which time their son, Glenn, was born (coinciding with John Glenn orbiting the Earth).
Upon their return to the U.S., they were stationed near Washington, D.C., for five years and enjoyed the historic sights. They were subsequently sent to Montgomery, Ala., where they spent 17 years, and three children graduated from Auburn University, and one joined the Air Force. Meanwhile, Signa began a real estate career.
Upon Jay's retirement, they moved to Brookings and lived there for 23 years. Signa's mother, Fern Hannaford, moved from Medford and lived with them for 11 years. Signa continued in real estate and became a member of Soroptimists International and other organizations. Jay was president of the Chetco Senior Center and a driver for disabled vets.
Upon Signa's 25-year retirement, they moved to Ashland and last year to Medford to be close to son Jay (Junko) and family. Son Glenn (Destiney) live in Eagle Point, daughter Sharon Fischer in Brookings and son Steve (Diana) live in Huntsville, Ala. Jacob and Signa keep busy with their four children, 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
