Two more Oregon companies join magazine's billion-dollar club

Nine privately held Oregon companies had revenue of more than $1 billion last year, an all-time high, according to Oregon Business Magazine.

In its annual survey of the state's top 150 private firms, the magazine noted that two more companies joined the billion-dollar club in the past year.

Wood products and real estate firm Jeld-Wen of Klamath Falls has topped the list since 1995, while No. 2 Hoffman Corp., a Portland construction company, leaped from No. 10 to No. 2. Prineville tire retailer Les Schwab Tire Centers was No. 3. Roseburg Forest Products, which was the top 150's dominant company before being surpassed by Jeld-Wen, was No. 7, falling one spot.

Although it's privately held, Harry and David Holdings has bonds that are publicly traded. The company reported sales of $598.204 million in the fiscal year that ended June 24, 2006, which would have put the gourmet food and gift retailer in the top 25.

The magazine listed Harry and David with a dozen or so other firms not responding to its survey.

Oregon Business reported the average revenue among its Private 150 was $274 million, while average revenue growth was 11 percent.

It appeared the past year was generally better for employers outside of Southern Oregon, primarily because Curry, Douglas and Jackson county companies all dropped in the rankings.

Swanson Group, a wood products company in Glendale, was No. 23, falling one spot, and C&K Markets of Brookings, which operates 59 Ray's Food Place and other supermarkets as well as 13 pharmacies, was No. 27, slipping a spot. Both were in the $250 million to $1 billion category in sales.

Medford-based Sherm's Thunderbird dropped three places to No. 62 in the $150 million to $250 million class, while D.R. Johnson Lumber Co. of Riddle fell four spots to No. 56. In the $100 million to $150 million range, South Coast Lumber Co. dropped two places to No. 76.

Butler Automotive Group of Ashland dropped six places to 115 in the $50 million to $75 million sales range.
