State maker of streetcars strikes a deal in Southwest

PORTLAND — Oregon Iron Works Inc. has won a $26 million contract to build seven streetcars for the city of Tucson, Ariz.

Under the deal, the city of Tucson can opt to buy as many as seven additional cars from United Streetcar LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary.

Oregon Iron Works vice president Shandra Brown says the company is the only manufacturer in the nation that produces modern streetcars with amenities such as air conditioning and bike racks, as opposed to historic replicas.

Brown says the streetcars can reach 44 mph.
