REI sets opening, takes on creek project

Outdoor gear retailer REI said its Medford store will open Friday, Oct. 5, with grand opening activities continuing through Sunday, Oct. 7.

The Kent, Wash., membership cooperative will employ more than 50 people at its 24,287-square-foot store in the Northgate Centre Marketplace.

Spokesperson Bethany Hawley said employees will be working with the Lomakatsi Restoration Project along Bear Creek from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, at Spencer Street.

The project involves watering and mulching recently planted trees, invasive plant removal and trail building. The Lomakatsi Restoration Project recently received a $10,000 grant from REI to help spur maintenance and ecological stewardship activities.
