The University of Oregon's Economic Index readings for the Rogue Valley showed few signs of an expanding economy as of April.
Tim Duy, who heads up the Oregon Economic Forum, said Portland and Eugene continued following recent trends — just below a growth level. He said recovery in the Rogue Valley and Salem remains muted, while Central Oregon fell back, most likely because first-quarter indicators were overstated.
Even though building has picked up, it remain well off historical levels, creating continued economic drag.
A Texas-based chicken wing restaurant chain said Medford is one of 12 cities where a California franchisee plans to open stores in Oregon and Idaho.
The first Wingstop restaurant is scheduled to open in southeast Portland early next year with more to follow in Bend, Eugene, Springfield and Boise.
A spokesperson for the 18-year-old, 515-unit chain said a Rogue Valley site has yet to be secured. The chain opened 34 restaurants in 2011 and an additional 50 are scheduled to turn the lights on in 2012.
Wingstop is a cooked-to-order chicken restaurant featuring traditional and boneless wings, strips and glider sandwiches and Idaho potatoes.
The restaurants typically seat 20 to 40 customers and have no drive-thru. Wingstop locations hire about 20 staff members.
