The Housing Authority of Jackson County received $127,526 from the U.S. Housing and Urban Development Department as part of a $4.2 million program to hire service coordinators at Northwest agencies.
The coordinators help families find employment resources and job-training opportunities.
The 35 Northwest agencies are among some 700 public housing agencies announced Thursday as receiving $54 million in Housing Choice Voucher Family Self Sufficiency grants. The agencies work with welfare agencies, schools and local partners to develop comprehensive programs for participants in HUD's Housing Choice Voucher rental assistance program.
Freight activity at the Medford airport declined 3.1 percent in August. It was the fourth-straight monthly decline but was far less than the 10.1 percent drop in July.
The county-run airport reported 415,987 pounds of cargo passed through its terminals last month, the second-lowest August figure during the past dozen years. The only year with less weight in that period was 2009.
For the first eight months of the year, freight activity is down 1.1 percent from 2010. Since reaching nearly 9.5 million pounds in 2000, the weight factor has surpassed 8 million pounds just twice — 2005 and 2006.
During August, shipments into the Rogue Valley accounted for 55.6 percent of the cargo activity. For the year, 52.1 percent of the shipments have been incoming.
