CAVE JUNCTION — Ted and Terri Gerber have completed acquisition of Foris Vineyards from Russell and Elizabeth Berard, whom they formed a partnership with in 1989.
The Gerbers, now sole owners, said they intend to propel the Foris brand to national recognition. Ted Gerber planted his first vineyard in 1974 and founded Foris Winery in 1986. Gerber received the Oregon Winery Association's Founders Award in 2000 for his contributions to the industry. He now manages more than 200 acres of vineyards in the Illinois Valley.
Foris also announced Bryan Wilson's appointment as winemaker. Wilson began his career in the 1980s, serving as winemaker at Benziger Winery in Sonoma for 10 years and at Napa's Stag's Leap Wine Cellars for one year before moving to Oregon in 1995. Among his Oregon stops were Silvan Ridge and Del Rio. He teamed up with Gerber two years ago and began developing his own brand, Cuckoo's Nest.
According to Oregon Wine Press, Foris has grown to become one of Oregon's Top 20 wineries. It ranks No. 14 out of 350 bonded wineries, producing 48,000 cases in 2007. Its wines are distributed in 36 states.
