Bed Bath & Beyond plans store at Rogue Valley Mall

Bed Bath & Beyond will occupy the lower-level Rogue Valley Mall space vacated by Linens 'N Things nearly two years ago.

In early 2011, the store will join the 10 Bed Bath & Beyond stores in Oregon and 972 in 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Canada.

Linens 'N Things fared well in locally, but the debt-ridden company folded when it failed to emerge from bankruptcy.

Bed Bath & Beyond, on the other hand, has done very well in recent quarters.

The Union, N.J.-based company's fiscal second-quarter earnings climbed 34 percent as the housewares retailer recorded its fourth straight quarter of double-digit sales growth. Bed Bath & Beyond reported a $181.8 million profit, while revenue grew 11.6 percent, to $2.14 billion.

Bed Bath & Beyond has more than a billion dollars in cash reserves, has opened 15 stores so far this year and expects to open about 30 more before the year's end, said company spokesperson Catherine Gentile.

"That's currently the company's strategy," she said.

The retailer last opened a new store in Oregon four years ago in the Salem area. The number of employees per store was not available; the Medford Linens 'N Things store had 25 employees at the time of its closing.

Gentile said she had not been notified of a signed lease with mall and Bed Bath & Beyond doesn't comment on new locations until leases are signed.

Rogue Valley Mall General Manager Jeff Barber could not be reached for comment Monday.

SD Deacon Construction of Portland will head up the tenant improvement work that will re-arrange the northeast corner of the mall for the second time in recent years.

Crews demolished the old movie theater in the location prior to the June 2003 opening of Linens 'N Things, but this makeover should be somewhat easier because there won't be a great deal of concrete removal.
