Avista offers tips to save on heating costs

Avista Utilities, Southern Oregon's natural gas provider, has compiled a list of energy-saving ideas for the coming winter.

The Spokane, Washington, firm suggests checking air flow around your living quarters, making sure to use supplemental heating sources efficiently to help manage your energy costs.

Inspect door sweeps, and caulk around windows and doors to prevent cold air seepage. As a temporary measure, roll a towel and place it at the base of exterior doors.

Set your thermostat at 68 degrees when you are home and reduce it a few degrees at night and when you are away. Restrict the use of wood fireplaces in extremely cold weather. Use space heaters in small, occupied areas for short periods, and not as a main source of heating. They can be more costly to operate than other heat sources.

For people with baseboard heating, turn down the heat in unused rooms and close the doors. Turn off kitchen, bath and other ventilating fans when you are done. Such fans can empty a house of warm air in a single hour.
