Airline begins Oakland trips with a contest

If you have nothing on your calendar for this afternoon, Allegiant Air just might keep you busy until Sunday.

Allegiant is inaugurating service between Medford and Oakland today, along with new connections between eight other airports and the Bay Area city.

To kick off the Medford service, the airline will give away two roundtrip tickets to Oakland, plus hotel accommodations. The only catch is that the winner has to be ready to go almost immediately.

Anyone 21 or older interested in entering the contest must arrive between 1 p.m. and 1:45 p.m. today with bags packed and ready to board the 3 p.m. flight to Oakland. The winner will receive three-nights hotel stay at one of Allegiant's 35 hotel partner properties.

The contest will be held at the ticketing lobby on the first floor of the terminal and validated parking will be provided to all contestants by the airport. Each person will receive one entry.

However, if participants come to the airport dressed as "tacky tourists" they will receive two entries into the giveaway, doubling their chances to win. The winner will be announced at 1:55 p.m., and then will immediately check in to board the flight.

All other trip expenses will be the winners' responsibility. The return flight will arrive in Medford at 2:20 p.m. Sunday, April 29.

The winner's voucher is for air travel only and does not include checked bag fees, assigned seats, car rental or insurance or ground transportation. One hotel room will be provided by Allegiant. Each ticketed passenger is allowed one carry-on bag plus one personal item, such as a purse, briefcase or laptop computer.

In addition to Medford, Allegiant has begun new flights to Oakland from Eugene and Redmond; Billings, Bozeman, Kalispell and Missoula, Mont.; Bellingham, Wash., and Idaho Falls, Idaho.

Las Vegas-based Allegiant Travel Co., Allegiant Air's parent company, Wednesday announced first-quarter earnings of $21.7 million, a 26 percent jump from first-quarter 2011's $17.2 million net. Allegiant produced revenue of $237.9 million, up 23.1 percent.

Allegiant said it will have six Boeing 757s in service in early 2013 and has announced service from Las Vegas and Fresno to Hawaii at the end of June.
