Wrong-way driver closes I-5 near Central Point

A Medford-area man driving down Interstate 5 in the wrong direction near Central Point early this morning caused a wreck that closed the freeway for nearly an hour and injured a girl from California, Oregon State Police reported.

Troopers cited Michael L. Smith, 56, on charges of driving under the influence of intoxicants, reckless driving, and third-degree assault.

At about 2:45 a.m. today, Smith drove his 2008 Toyota Solara south in the northbound lanes of I-5 near milepost 33 and crashed nearly head-on with a northbound vehicle driven by Angela Shavlovsky, 50, of Sacramento, Calif.,

She was not injured, but her passenger Sofia Shavlovsky, 17, also of Sacramento, was taken to Providence Medford Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Smith refused medical treatment at the scene, but later went to Rogue Valley Medical Center for an examination.

The Oregon Department of Transportation handled traffic control for the hour that northbound lanes were closed. OSP troopers are completing the investigation. Central Point police and Jackson County Fire District No. 3 assisted at the scene.
