Wheelchair-bound woman in road hit by Medford driver, dies

A 76-year-old woman in an electric wheelchair was hit by a pickup truck and killed Sunday while trying to cross a road in Grants Pass.

Police told the Grants Pass Daily Courier that Mildred S. Britton died Sunday afternoon at the scene of the 3:45 p.m. accident.

Police say 60-year-old William R. Evans of Medford was headed out of town on Rogue River Highway when Britton crossed in front of him. As his vehicle approached the highway's intersection with Hamilton Lane, Britton crossed the street in her wheelchair, moving directly in front of the pickup.

In the wake of the crash, the Rogue River Highway was closed for about five hours. No citations have been issued.
