Weather closes Interstate 5 north of Grants Pass

The storm bringing snow to the valley floor today is making a mess of travel on Interstate 5.

The freeway is closed eight miles north of Grants Pass because of power lines across the road. To the south, vehicles must have chains to cross the Siskiyou Summit.

About an inch of snow had fallen in the lower parts of Medford by the middle of the afternoon, and the National Weather Service was predicting more would fall throughout the rest of the day, evening and on Monday.

It predicted 1 to 4 inches of snow below 500 feet and 3 to 6 inches of snow above 500 feet by Monday morning. Medford is at about 1,400 feet.

“A cold front is making progress throughout southwest Oregon, allowing snow levels to fall to valley floors,” forecasters said in a heavy-snow warning in effect through 4 a.m. Monday. “The front will continue to produce heavy snow as it makes its way eastward through this evening.”
