Video contest honors the bard

The Ashland Daily Tidings and Mail Tribune host a William Shakespeare tribute video contest through August.

Entrants for the Shakespeare Scenes video contest can act out a favorite scene from one of Shakespeare's plays, reinterpret a scene with modern language or write their own scene in Shakespearean language.

Submit videos and vote for your favorites at Submissions can be made until 5 p.m., Aug. 17 and not a minute later. Viewers can vote for their favorites until 5 p.m., Aug. 24. Winners will be announced online and in the newspapers Aug. 28.

Livia Genise, artistic director for the Camelot Theater, Rick Cornelius, Shakespeare theater teacher at Ashland High School, and Miles Fletcher, actor and videographer for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, will serve as judges. They will be looking for originality, technical skill, acting quality and overall production value.

The first place video will win a $50 gift certificate to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Second place will receive an Oregon Shakespeare Festival poster signed by cast and crew. Third place will receive a souvenir program signed by the cast. The People's Choice winner, determined by the entry with a majority of viewer votes, will receive a $20 gift certificate to the Tudor Guild gift shop in Ashland.

Videos with inappropriate content like nudity, and over-the-top language and violence will not be accepted. Avoid copyrighted music and characters, too.
