Vendors line up for Grants Pass farmers market

Josephine County Fairgrounds officials are hoping that the introductory Farmers and Crafters Market on Thursday will be a fruitful event.

Declining attendance at the annual fair, losses during horse racing at Grants Pass Downs and aging infrastructure have left the Redwood Highway facility with a budget shortfall. County commissioners have given the facility until September to turn things around.

Interim Fair Manager Mary Groves said the market already has enticed about 35 vendors, and more are coming on board every day.

The market will be open from 3:30 to 7 p.m. It will feature vendors selling baked goods, fresh produce, cut flowers, dairy products from local farms, wine, cider and beer, crafts, prepared food and more.

The market will be closed the third Thursday in August to accommodate the annual Josephine County Fair, Groves said. If enough vendors want to continue the market indoors after mid-November, a decision on that idea will be made by September.

The market is aimed at supporting local farmers, gardeners, artisans, crafters and food-related entrepreneurs by providing a venue for selling their products.

The event is sponsored by Wheeler Toyota. For additional information about becoming a vendor, call 541-476-3215.
