Vehicle fire spreads to two other cars

A Jeep caught fire in an apartment complex Thursday morning, igniting two other cars parked nearby.

About 8:30 a.m., David Scearcy was working on his Jeep in the parking lot of Lilac Meadows Apartments on Cummings Lane and ignited a fire when he started the vehicle, Medford Fire Department Capt. Wayne Painter said. The fire started in the engine compartment, but spread to a bucket of gasoline and oil, then to two nearby vehicles.

Multiple fire engine crews responded to the fire on Cummings Lane, and the blaze was put out in about 10 minutes, Painter said.

The Jeep that first caught fire is a total loss and the owner only has liability insurance that would not cover this type of incident, Painter said. A 1987 Nissan 300ZX that was parked to the left of the Jeep was also a total loss, leaving owner Stephen Silicani, a disabled veteran, with no mode of transportation. The third burned vehicle parked on the right side of the Jeep sustained only burns and melting to the back side of the car.

No injuries were reported and no citations had been issued.
