UPDATED: Two dead in apparent Shady Cove homicide

SHADY COVE — Two Shady Cove residents were found dead from gunshot wounds earlier this morning in what police are calling a possible murder-suicide.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office and Eagle Point Police responded to a 9-1-1 call at 2:30 a.m. reporting shots fired along the 20000 block of Highway 62.

Police responded to a residence and found one deceased victim with a gunshot wound. Sheriff's Office officials would not comment on the wound's location.

SWAT police assisted in a sweep to find a suspect in the surrounding area and found a second deceased victim during their search, also with a gunshot wound.

Updated: 10 a.m.: One of the victims has been identified as Dewayne Garrett Upton, 36, of Shady Cove. He was reportedly found dead near the Rogue River with a small-caliber handgun nearby.

The other victim has been identified as Makiala Lynn Upton, 30.

Police and a medical examiner are still on scene and are investigating whether the incident was a murder-suicide.

"It appears to be a domestic situation," said spokeswoman Andrea Carlson.
