UPDATED: Grants Pass crash victim's name released

GRANTS PASS, Ore. — Oregon State Police say an 82-year-old man was killed early Tuesday in a one-car crash on Highway 199 in the Hayes Hill area near Grants Pass.

OSP Sgt. Mark Byrd said the man, James Bowling, of O'Brien, was driving northbound near milepost 15 in a 2007 Toyota 4-Runner at 12:35 a.m. Then, "for an unknown reason," the vehicle left the road, traveled about 250 feet and rolled down an embankment where it struck a tree, according to a news release.

Bowling was extricated from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. He was wearing a seatbelt.

The incident is still under investigation by OSP. The Oregon Department of Transportation, Josephine County Sheriff's Office, Rural Metro Fire Department, Illinois Fire Department, Grants Pass Fire Department and AMR Ambulance responded to the scene.
